Mycoplasma pneumoniae can cause tracheobronchitis and primary atypical pneumonia with clinical symptoms such as nonproductive cough, sore throat, low-grade fever and middle-ear involvement.

Together with the bacteria Chlamydia pneumoniae and Legionella spp./pneumophila it belongs to the common agents causing ‘Atypical Pneumonia’.

Serologic tests are used to assess the serological status of an individual and are indicative for an acute or past infection.
